Since he’s in Melbourne...it was more likely a snake (spiders are more of a Sydney thing) . Or someone poisoned his coffee.

Here’s the thing...you can theoretically drink snake venom with no ill effects ( other than opinions surrounding your questionable tastes). So I suspect that your scenario, while appealing, is unlikely. Unless the snake was a bearded hipster in disguise...
